Rev. Elymas Payson Rogers

by Jasmine Holmes

Rogers was a Presbyterian clergyman, poet, missionary, educator, and prominent abolitionist. He wrote “A Poem on the Fugitive Slave Law” and “The Repeal of the Missouri Compromise Considered.”

Elymas Payson Rogers was born into poverty in Connecticut in 1815. He supported himself by teaching while earning a degree from Oneida Institute with the hopes of entering the ministry. In 1841, he began his almost twenty-year career as an educator and minister in New Jersey, all the while dreaming of someday becoming a missionary.

Rogers was an accomplished poet as well as a member of the African Civilization Society, and a loving husband to his wife, Harriet.

Rogers wanted to be a missionary his entire life and was finally able to achieve his dream in 1861. Unfortunately, he died from heart disease fifty days after arrival.
